One hundred EOPYY doctors are under investigation for electronically overprescribing medications to patients or their relatives after being flagged by the monitoring systems of EOPYY, the Ministry of Health, and IDIKA. They have been called to account for their actions.

According to “Kathimerini,” the monitoring systems use advanced business intelligence and antifraud technologies that can, through simple queries, detect suspicious prescription patterns indicative of overprescribing practices.

It is estimated that in 2024, these doctors prescribed between 250 and 422 different medications per person for personal financial gain.

Electronic prescribing refers to medications prescribed by a doctor, with the cost shared between the state and the patient.

According to Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis, EOPYY loses at least €50 million annually due to unnecessary prescriptions.

In the past 4-5 months alone, over €3 million in prescription fraud cases have been identified, according to EOPYY President Theano Karpodini.

Two doctors are among the cases, each responsible for an estimated €800,000 loss to EOPYY. Additionally, an audit has been launched for citizens over 60 who are long-term users of more than five different medications. In these cases, doctors will receive a notice to reassess whether the patients must continue these treatments indefinitely.
