Who is P.Diddy?

(fyiteam)

The 54-year-old P. Diddy (also known as Diddy, Puff Daddy, or Sean Combs) is a producer, rapper, and entrepreneur. In 1993, at age 20, he founded his record label, Bad Boy Records, which soon signed his friend, Notorious B.I.G. The music he produced on Bad Boy Records helped shape the signature sound of East Coast rap in the ’90s.

Throughout his career, Diddy brought artists like Mary J. Blige and Usher into the spotlight, produced for major artists like Jay-Z, and earned three Grammy Awards, along with substantial wealth and influence.

He was one of the first rappers to link rap with fashion and luxury brands, founding the high-end clothing line Sean John in 1998 and becoming the face of premium drinks like Cîroc vodka and DeLeón tequila.

He became well-known for his “white parties,” whose guest lists included the likes of Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Ashton Kutcher.

When did his troubles with the law begin?

(fyiteam)

Pretty much at the same time as his career took off.

In 1999, he was arrested for assaulting an executive from another record label with a chair, a phone, and a champagne bottle. He was fined and ordered to attend anger management classes.

That same year, he was involved in a nightclub shooting in Manhattan while with his then-girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez. The case drew significant media attention as he faced four charges related to gun offenses, including paying his driver to take the blame for his gun. He was acquitted of all charges.

Over the years, he faced accusations of threats and violence against women, both in interviews and formally in 2017, when his former personal chef, Cindy Rueda, sued him for sexual harassment and other claims. The case was settled out of court and received little media attention.

The "beginning of the end"

(fyiteam)

In November 2023, R&B singer Cassie (Cassandra Ventura), Diddy’s former girlfriend and an artist signed to his label, filed a lawsuit against him.

She accused him of repeatedly assaulting, raping, and subjecting her to sex trafficking since 2005. She alleged that he and his associates threatened her to remain silent, warning that speaking out would harm her career.

Cassie also claimed that Diddy threatened to blow up rapper Kid Cudi’s car because she and Cudi were dating and that the car did, in fact, explode. A representative for Cudi confirmed to the New York Times that “all of this is true.”

The lawsuit was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount, with Diddy denying the allegations. However, in May, when CNN released a video showing him physically assaulting her, he issued a public apology.

5, 10, 15, 120 lawsuits against Diddy

The prominence of Cassie’s case opened the door for at least 10 more lawsuits involving incidents from 1990 to 2023. At the time, the youngest alleged victim was 16.

These lawsuits describe plaintiffs being victims or witnesses to sexual harassment, abuse, and rape, often recorded on video, as well as blackmail, drugging without consent, physical assault, and trafficking, among other claims.

An additional 120 lawsuits are expected to be filed next month against Diddy, including allegations of sexual harassment and other misconduct, with 25 of the alleged victims being minors, according to their attorneys.

Criminal charges & thousands of bottles of baby oil

(fyiteam)

Cassie’s lawsuit caught the attention of prosecutors and led to the criminal prosecution of Diddy, which resulted in his arrest in September.

In May, FBI agents raided Diddy’s properties, seizing drugs, illegal firearms, and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant, among other items.

While possessing baby oil is not a crime in itself (though, in this case, it is allegedly linked to criminal activity), prosecutors often include such details in charges to attract attention and generate publicity around the case.

What are his current charges?

(fyiteam)
  1. Racketeering (Extortion): Since 2008, he allegedly used his status and businesses to abuse women, then blackmailed them and ensured the silence of all involved through other crimes such as bribery, arson, and kidnapping.
  2. Sex Trafficking
  3. Transporting individuals for prostitution (which is illegal in the U.S.)

Fyi: The maximum prison sentences for these charges are: 1) Life imprisonment, 2) 15 years, 3) 10 years

Did you ever attend a Diddy party, or are you one of the lucky ones?

(fyiteam)

The indictment centers on the “Freak Offs,” multi-day drug-fueled orgies where Diddy allegedly coerced women to participate through threats or promises and recorded them for blackmail purposes.

No other individuals have been criminally charged to date, though some of Diddy’s associates are named in various lawsuits.

Diddy denies all the allegations and remains in custody after the court denied his request for bail and house arrest. His trial is set for May 5, 2025.

Let's dive into some conspiracy theories

(fyiteam)

The attorneys for the 120 plaintiffs have said that the lawsuits will name co-defendants from Diddy’s inner circle, including “well-known names.” This has led to widespread speculation and theories, which have quickly gone beyond the case itself and gone viral on TikTok.

One of the main theories connects Diddy with Jay-Z and Beyoncé, as they have attended his parties and are known to be friends. The theory suggests that, at best, they were aware of Diddy’s actions, and at worst, the three were involved in the plane crash that killed R&B singer Aaliyah, allegedly “removing her” to prevent her from hindering Beyoncé’s career. Similar suspicions are raised about the deaths of other celebrities, mainly those mentioned in the lyrics of J. Cole’s song “She Knows,” with some speculating that the title refers to Beyoncé.

Additionally, Diddy’s role as Justin Bieber’s mentor early in his career, while Bieber was still a minor, and the fact that Bieber spent 48 hours at Diddy’s home sparked suspicions that Bieber may have been a victim of Diddy. These suspicions led to the release of a song, allegedly created using AI, featuring Bieber’s voice, titled “I Lost Myself at a Diddy Party.”

This renewed focus on Diddy has also revived old theories connecting him to the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur.

Is this a #MeToo moment for the music industry?

(fyiteam)

While the #MeToo movement brought attention to sexual abuse in some industries, particularly film, activists told the New York Times that no similar reckoning has occurred for the powerful figures in the music industry.

After Cassie’s lawsuit, Diddy lost major business deals, including one with Macy’s department stores.

A 2018 survey of over 1,200 musicians found that 72% of women had experienced gender discrimination, and 67% of them reported being victims of sexual harassment.
