Stefanos Kasselakis was deposed from his position as president of SYRIZA-PS following a vote at an emergency Central Committee meeting held yesterday (September 12).
In the vote, 17 members of the SYRIZA Political Secretariat supported his removal, 1 voted against, and 1 abstained. Theodora Tzakri opposed the decision, describing Kasselakis’ dismissal as a “historic mistake” and an “improper action” in her statement.
In its announcement after the decision, the SYRIZA Central Committee emphasized that “respecting the decisions of the Party’s collective bodies and adhering to the statutes and procedures is a duty for every member and leader, and no one is above them.”
Deposed refers to a person who has lost their position or authority or someone who has been officially dismissed from a role.
SYRIZA secretary Rania Svigou called the emergency Central Committee meeting after members close to Stefanos Kasselakis, such as Xenophon Kontiadis, raised doubts about whether he had been officially “removed” from the SYRIZA presidency.
Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon, around 10 supporters of Stefanos Kasselakis gathered outside SYRIZA’s headquarters to voice their disapproval of the Political Secretariat members. Kasselakis condemned the insults, calling the incident a “provocation,” and urged people not to sabotage the visit of SYRIZA’s parliamentary leader, Nikos Pappas, to the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). In the same statement, he hinted at his candidacy in the SYRIZA elections, with November 24 being the most likely date.
