The Brussels prosecutor has recommended criminal charges of dangerous bodily harm and rape against A. Georgoulis following a 2020 complaint lodged by an employee of the European Commission.
According to a report by Christina Kopsini in Efimerida ton Sintakton, the recommendation is submitted to a specialized court, which decides whether to formally press charges and schedules the initial trial. This trial, initially set for June 27, has been postponed to the end of 2024 following a delay request from A. Georgoulis.
Georgoulis, who lost his immunity and was expelled from SYRIZA, ran as a candidate for the ‘Green Movement’ in the June European elections but did not secure a seat.
If the prosecutor’s recommendation is accepted, a criminal court will be designated to thoroughly review the case and issue final rulings.
In any case, the prosecutor’s recommendation had already been communicated to the former MEP when he claimed the Belgian judiciary had never summoned him. During the election campaign in May and June, he publicly said that, since no criminal charges had been filed against him, he was “morally and legally free” to run in the European elections.
In a statement today, Alexis Georgoulis responded to Efimerida ton Sintakton, denying the information. The newspaper then issued a follow-up statement, saying, “We uphold the presumption of innocence for Mr. Georgoulis and any accused individuals until justice is served, but we will continue with our reporting.”
