Yesterday, SYRIZA’s leadership abruptly decided to shut down the daily edition of the newspaper “Avgi” due to low sales (750 copies per day) with the aim of “enhancing the Sunday edition and avgi. gr,” according to the announcement.
According to a report by Ef. Syn, a “recovery model” will be implemented for both the print edition and the radio station “Sto Kokkino,” with information indicating that the 50 employees will not be laid off for now. In 2022, a previous attempt to close the daily edition of the newspaper was halted due to employee mobilizations and interventions by SYRIZA officials.
“Avgi” first circulated in August 1952 as the official publication of the United Democratic Left (EDA) and has consistently advocated for left-wing positions.
After the announcement, the newspaper and avgi.gr, employees went on a 24-hour strike, issuing a statement in which they said that the newspaper “has always had financial problems and has always survived” while also denouncing that “no financial report, no presentation of data, no planning or sustainability plan” was presented.”.
The Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) issued an announcement calling on SYRIZA’s leadership “to reconsider its stance” and initiating consultations between SYRIZA and the workers’ unions to discuss labor issues.
