Miltos Tentoglou secured his third consecutive gold medal in the European Athletics Championships on Saturday in Rome.He became the European champion in open track and field for the third time in a row, having previously topped the podium in Berlin in 2018 and Munich in 2022.
His jump of 8.65m set a personal career record, surpassing his previous best of 8.60m from 2021, and is the best global performance this year, approaching the Greek record of 8.66m held by Louis Tsatoumas since 2007.
The Greek athlete marked the best global performance of the year with his first jump (8.42m) and improved with subsequent jumps (8.45m, 8.49m), culminating in 8.65m, which he achieved in his last two attempts.
This is Tentoglou’s 11th gold medal in international competition, keeping him at the top of the list of Greeks with the most gold medals.
So far, Tentoglou’s gold is Greece’s only medal in this year’s tournament, which concludes on Wednesday. Katerina Stefanidi will also compete for a medal tonight at 21:15 (ERT) in the women’s pole vault final.
This year’s European Athletics Championships is the 26th in the event’s history and is being held in Rome for the second time, 50 years after the Italian capital first hosted the event in 1974. About 1,500 athletes from 48 countries are participating in this year’s tournament, competing in 47 events.
