The fire that began on Mount Falakro in Drama on Wednesday afternoon has been burning for six days in a remote grassy area. So far, it has not threatened any populated areas or forests.
Strong winds hinder efforts to extinguish the fire, making it challenging for both aerial and ground teams. As a result, the direction of the fire remains unpredictable.
In the area, members of the Special Forest Operations Unit are actively engaged, having traveled to Drama from Alexandroupoli and Xanthi. Today (22.07), their efforts were bolstered by the arrival of 50 additional personnel from Athens.
Two lightning strikes ignited the fire, forming a large firefront in different locations in the Chionotrypa area.
According to local media, the fire has burned more than 11,000 acres.
In a social media update, the municipality of Drama said that “every possible effort is being made to mitigate the risk.” On Sunday (21.07), the municipality highlighted that the mayor and relevant deputy mayors were present at the firefront, and additional vehicles were requisitioned to support the firefighting operations.
It is also noted that the weather conditions and the fire’s progression are worsening, significantly increasing the risk.
