Netflix’s musical Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, led the Oscar nominations with a total of 13, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress. Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the first openly trans actress nominated for an Oscar.

Emilia Pérez now holds the record for the most nominations for a non-English language film, surpassing Roma. Only three films in Oscar history have received more nominations: All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land, each with 14. Notably, no Netflix film has won the Oscar for Best Picture to date.

This year, the announcement of the nominations was delayed because of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.

Two other films, the musical Wicked and the post-war epic The Brutalist, each received 10 nominations, including Best Picture. Other nominees for Best Picture include Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, I’m Still Here, and The Substance.

Notable surprises, according to the Associated Press, include Nickel Boys by RaMell Ross, a drama exploring the life and struggles of the African American community, and the Brazilian political film I’m Still Here. Meanwhile, The Apprentice, the movie about Donald Trump’s life that has yet to be released in the U.S., garnered two acting nominations for Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong.

This year, the announcement of the nominations was delayed due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, and unlike last year’s clear frontrunner (Oppenheimer), this year’s race is wide open, with several films considered strong contenders for Best Picture.
