Hellenic Train has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to eliminate the second train driver from the driver’s cabin of each train, according to the Panhellenic Union of Locomotive Personnel.
The workers call it a “criminal proposal” from the management, particularly given that the European Train Control System (ETCS), which automatically brakes trains to reduce human error, is not in operation anywhere.
“This is a criminal proposal from the management of Hellenic Train, which will face opposition not only from the train drivers but from all of Greek society,” the workers said in their statement.
OMED is an organization focused on supporting dialogue and providing mediation services between employees and employers.
They also report that, despite being invited by the employees to engage in dialogue before the Organization for Mediation and Arbitration (OMED) regarding the abolition of the second train driver and other safety issues, the company’s management refuses to attend.
Finally, they state that the management is sending four unionists to disciplinary proceedings, “either without cause or for formal reasons that some seek to make substantive.”
