GSEE and ADEDY have called a 24-hour strike tomorrow in both the public and private sectors, with demands that include the withdrawal of the “13-hour workday” bill, the reinstatement of collective labor agreements, the restoration of 13th and 14th salaries in the public sector, and the reduction of weekly working hours to 37.5, in line with practices already adopted in other European countries.
Hospital staff, Athens court clerks, the Athens retail employees’ union and teachers will also join the strike.
Buses will run between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., while the metro, electric railway and tram will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Taxis will strike for the entire day, ferries will remain docked, and flights will take place as planned.
The bill, which would allow working hours to be extended up to 13 hours for a single employer, is still pending submission, despite expectations it would be tabled in September.
“The government, with its proposed regulations on working time, shows that it does not care about work-life balance, or about health and safety in workplaces,” GSEE said.
ADEDY added: “The measures announced by the prime minister at the Thessaloniki International Fair are yet another insult to thousands of public sector workers, for whom no salary increase was announced apart from a 2% cut in the tax rate, amounting to just €100–200 a year.”
Rallies are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. nationwide: in Athens at Klafthmonos Square and Syntagma, and in Thessaloniki at Kamara.
