North Korea dispatched a fresh batch of hundreds of balloons filled with debris to South Korea, with many landing at Seoul’s airport, located 40 kilometers away from the border between the two countries.
This resulted in flights to and from the airport being suspended for approximately three hours in the early hours, with significant delays also affecting departures and arrivals. According to a representative, several balloons were found inside and around the airport boundaries. The representative added that this wasn’t the first time airport operations were disrupted by balloons.
Bags attached to the balloons contained items such as Hello Kitty merchandise, old clothes, and soil mixed with human feces, as reported by South Korea.
North Korea has already dispatched over 1000 of these balloons in retaliation to balloon campaigns by South Korean activists that carry anti-government propaganda. In addition to propaganda materials, activists in South Korea have sent balloons containing cash, items from prohibited media sources, and even Choco Pies, a South Korean snack that is forbidden in North Korea.
