Two people were killed and four others injured yesterday in a traffic accident on the Egnatia Road, when a truck driver, due to dense fog, crashed into stopped vehicles at the Polymylo tolls, between Veria and Kozani.

Reports indicate that the e-pass was not recognized by the machine because of the fog, leading to a traffic backup at the tolls.

The police arrested the truck driver, who was slightly injured and taken to the hospital for first aid.

Dense fog is a daily issue at this location, and previous pile-ups have occurred, including 5-6 vehicles last year and 50 vehicles in 2022, according to Thomas Sarafidis, president of the Western Macedonia EKAB Workers’ Union.

The truck driver reportedly told the police that, due to the dense fog, he did not see the two vehicles, according to media reports.

A driver also reported that one hour before the accident, they called the police to warn about the dangerous conditions. Despite the fog, which made the signage invisible, the tolls continued to operate.

The driver mentioned that the vehicle they were in had to brake with difficulty 500 meters before the tolls due to the traffic jam that had formed. Although they managed to avoid crashing into the stopped car ahead, the conditions, according to their account, seemed dangerous for drivers.

Following the accident, a 22-kilometer traffic jam formed, with vehicles trapped for 2.5 hours.
